Professions and Specialties is an alternate class system I am experimenting with.
Instead of selecting a class, a character being created selects a Profession and a Specialty. Professions offer non-core combat abilities. Specialties offer core combat abilities. In terms of class design, all Professions are Thievery 1, while Specialties vary.
The fact that all Professions are Thievery 1 allows me to present Specialties as a full class, with known XP costs, hit dice, and so on. Thievery doesn't affect anything other than the abilities it grants, and since all Professions have an identical XP cost, a Specialty's XP cost can be calculated without needing to know specifically which Profession was selected.
D&D 5E backgrounds, as well as the Iron Kingdoms and Dungeons: the Dragoning class systems, are the biggest inspirations of this system.
